Fixing your lousy punctuation and capitalization

Members of Fluther’s grammar police will be happy to know that we’re making strides toward proper English.

Fluther now applies some fancy computer logic to improve question formatting:

  • The first word will be capitalized
  • ALL CAPS will be converted to sentence-case
  • Repeated punctuation will be unified
  • Questions that omit punctuation will have a question mark appended

You’ll be able to see these changes in the Live Preview before you submit your question, so there shouldn’t be any surprises.

Here at Fluther, we believe that proper punctuation and capitalization makes questions easier to read and is generally easier on your sensitive jellyfish eyes.

Oh no… My mom never typs caps anymore because she is used to MS Word converting them automatically :(
Ah well, at least it’ll make Fluther easier to read ;)

  2. Gary Says:

Great improvement, but how about offering a spell-checker? Thanks.

  3. erik Says:

Many new web browsers have a spell checker built in. Have you tried using Firefox?

Finally, I must say this is a major improvement. Just one questions is it OS X or Safari that has the built in spell check because I always get it when filling out forms in safari.

    OSX & Safari…. It is system wide~

Thanks for all the hard work guys!

Not a moment too soon, guys. There are time that I feel like hitting myself in the head with a mallet. And is there a way of shunning or sending the “Idiot of the week” to Coventry?

  7. klaas4 Says:

Much easier to read, only it doesn’t filter ?!?!?!?!?!?! or !?!?!?!?!?!?!?! or ??!!!??!?!?!!?!?!?! or …
But it’s work in progress for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-)

  8. erik Says:

Actually, I just updated it so that it does. ;-)

  9. Gary Says:

Thanks foe the response, Erik I’ve just switched to Safari and have seen their spell-checker. However, it is not my spelling that disturbs me.

    Way to go!

Maybe it’s also wise to apply this is comments and questions themselves, too. But that is harder, because comments usually exist out of more than one sentence.
