Announcing the Badge Contest! Prizes!

Posted July 22nd, 2009 by ben

Hello Flutherites!

We have good news. We’ve just built a new way for you show your Fluther Lurve on your own website: the Lurve Badge! This is what it looks like:

My profile on Fluther

And to kick off the launching the Lurve Badge, we’ve decided to have a little contest. Oh, what fun!

Here’s what we’re giving away:

  • Runner-up gets a free Fluther T-Shirt
  • Grand Prize winner gets a secret, custom gift chosen personally for you by the Fluther Founders based on your profile. It’s going to be awesome.

Here’s how to enter:

  • If you don’t already have a blog or website, create one. (I recommend tumblr for something super easy.)
  • Paste the widget code into your blog directly as HTML.
Depending on what blog you use, there are lots of different ways to paste in the code. If you’re having difficulty, leave a note here and we’ll help you out–or ask on Fluther!

UPDATE: Check out this great tumblr how-to screencast from JohnPowell. http://www.pillowpersuasion.com/fluther/vids/wid.mov

On August 25th we’ll randomly select the runner-up and grand prize winner out of everyone who has installed the Fluther Lurve Badge on their blog,

As usual, let us know if you have any question or feedback–and good luck!

    tres sweet.

wait - does this mean if i win i get a banana?

  2. Dale Petrie Says:

Oooh…oooh, giant eyeball, here I come. Seriously though, I’ve been meaning to start my own blog for about a million years, maybe this will give me an excuse.

  3. Evelyns_Pet_Zebra Says:

Hmmm, I don’t have room for a zebra, I barely have room in this office for my computer and my Hissers.

  4. robmandu Says:

Should everyone notify you here if they’ve put up badges on their web sites? Or will you simply monitor the HTTP Referer request-header for traffic direct to Fluther user profile pages?

  5. Dog Says:

I am working on tumblr but without luck. It pastes in as code but is not converting. Maybe I should switch blog sites.

  6. ben Says:

@robmandu We are tracking the requests, so no need to notify us (and we already saw you are the first user to install your Lurve Badge on your blog. Looks great!).

@Dog So far, I’ve seen success in tumblr, so I wouldn’t switch blog sites. Would you like more detailed instructions on how to paste the code in?
The simplest way is something like:
    - Customize –> Info –> Description.. and paste the code there. Is that useful? Let me know if you want more specific help.

  7. Mangeons Says:

    Ickk. I’m confused. xD

I can’t figure out how to put the badge on my site (tumblr) /and/ I don’t know how to do the whatever whatchamacallit so that you know that I have it up there. Dx

    I can has halp? :(

  8. Casheroo Says:

I fear if I win, I’ll be sent a baby. No thank you, I already have one of the way. ;)

I’ll get to installing it on my journal today :)

  9. Casheroo Says:

hmm, so I tried putting it in my livejournal, and no badge came up, just “my profile on fluther” is that normal?

  10. cprevite Says:

So…if I win…I’ll get homemade chocolate chip cookies?!?

Holy sweet pickles! Tumblr here I come.

(I thought of putting it on my graphic design site, but it seems inappropriate)

  11. Dog Says:

    Success!

Many thanks to Robmandu for his help.

Now I am realizing that Tumblr is a cool site after all- I pretty much gave up on it last year.

  12. Hambayuti Says:

I’m having the same problems as Casheroo. =[

Help! (please? with sugar on top…)

  13. Ivan Says:

  14. sakura Says:

I tried pasting mine into my update on facebook, it didn’t work :( I wonder where else I can try it? Will it work on myspace??

  15. Dog Says:

It works on blogger blogs- just add an html widget and paste the code.

  16. Tink1113 Says:

Tried posting it on Last.fm but all that comes out is the website in blue and the while code is revealed. So I have the same problem as dear Casheroo and Hambayuti

  17. EmpressPixie Says:

I’m going to do this. On both of my blogs. But I don’t believe for one second that any prizes will go out. I’m *still* waiting for my guacamole.

Oh! Is that the top secret prize??? SOMEONE ACTUALLY GETS THE GUAC??

  18. SuperMouse Says:

    Done and Done!

  19. Mangeons Says:

I’m going to try it on Blogspot, my new blog… my friend and I are co-writing it. :D

  20. John Powell Says:

I made a little video for how to do it on tumblr.

    http://www.pillowpersuasion.com/fluther/vids/wid.mov

  21. fireinthepriory Says:

It works perfectly in Blogger, but as Casheroo et. al. have found, it doesn’t seem to like being in my livejournal profile.

Also I’ve just realized that ‘dalepetrie’ is Dale Petrie! All this while I’ve been pronouncing it “dah-LEH-peh-tree.” Like a french word, perhaps. Very elegant my way, albeit hilariously different than the real thing. :D

  22. ben Says:

    Thanks @JP, you’re a rockstar.

@sakura, unfortunately, it probably won’t work on Facebook (until we make something that does).

@Casheroo (Congrats), @Mangeons, @Hambayuti: See the awesome how-to vid by JP.

  23. eponymoushipster Says:

any way to add this to facebook, in the sidebar? that’s really the only bloggish type thing i use.

  24. eponymoushipster Says:

uhm, i’m a frigging retard. didn’t see the above comment. nevermind.

  25. YARNLADY Says:

    I have a blog on multiply: http://yarnladyisback.multiply.com/
but I can’t see anything about putting badges on it. Please help.

  26. mtl_zack Says:

I just started a blog yesterday! What a coincidence :) I’ll be sure to add a badge soon!

  27. Casheroo Says:

hmmm, his video showed it on tumblr, but not livejournal. I don’t even know what tumblr is *hides in shame*

  28. John Powell Says:

Yeah. My intent was only for Tumblr.

  29. YARNLADY Says:

I tried this blog also, and I still can’t see where to put it:
    http://www.mybloglog.com/buzz/members/yarnladyisback/

I also tried on my Newsvine account:
    http://yarnlady.newsvine.com/

I cannot find anyplace on any of my blogs to paste the code.

  30. The_Compassionate_Heretic Says:

My user name is too long to display properly on my badge.
Can a heretic get some text wrap?

  31. YARNLADY Says:

Per my comment above dated July 22nd at 8:27 pm why does it say: “YARNLADY Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation.” What does that mean?

  32. ru2bz46 Says:

    Works like a charm! http://ru2bz46.tumblr.com/

Now, I need something to say on a blog…

  33. Hambayuti Says:

Sadly, I checked the video and found I have different settings on how to place widgets on my blog. Sigh. Oh, well…”My profile on Fluther” is better than nothing (for the meantime) =P

  34. Davey Yzermans Says:

Can non-US residents also enter. If not, I’ll still put the badge up, it’s awesome!

  35. John Powell Says:

I attempted to add multiple ones on the same blog (wordpress) and got some interesting results. Me and Allie and PnL have killed the blog but I wanted to try.

    http://imgur.com/wc4av.png <–The code

    http://imgur.com/DCNaN.png <– The result

I don’t expect this to get fixed. It is a total “edge” case. But I thought I would let you know.

  36. sandystrachan Says:

Hopefully it’s open for us non-US residents , regardless the deed has been done :)

  37. sandystrachan Says:

@ben I found what you wrote to be of more use “The simplest way is something like:
    - Customize –> Info –> Description.. and paste the code there.”
Thanks for that as i would never of got it working .

  38. BBSDTFamily Says:

Done!! Now I can show off all my lurve :)

  39. Saturated_Brain Says:

Hmm… Snazzy! Looking forward to the results of this competition!

  40. Mangeons Says:

It works fine on Blogger. ;)

  41. Grisaille Says:

    No dice.

I’m still waiting on my goddamned guacamole I was promised.

    * spits *

  42. John Powell Says:

I updated the video a bit. Now it has fancy special effects. But it should be a bit easier to see what is going on.

  43. elijah Says:

Uuuumm yeah I’m not really into blogging and what have you. Can I just print mine out and tape it to my forehead? No? Booo!

  44. chels Says:

    It’s on my tumblr chelseababyy.tumblr.com :D

  45. MindErrantry Says:

I’m getting the same results on Blogger as I am on livejournal (i.e. it just has a link saying ‘My Fluther Profile’… Can anyone explain to me how to add the widget?

  46. Cynthia hugs Says:

does this mean that you guys already know that I have it on my tumblr?

  47. John Powell Says:

@Cynthia hugs :: Yes they know. It calls the servers on Fluther so they can see that you have it installed.

  48. Mangeons Says:

    I have mine up at deriot.blogspot.com :D

I just don’t get how you guys know, so I thought I’d post it here. xD

I have an RSS feed to Fluther if that’s what it is. ;)

  49. YARNLADY Says:

I have tried and failed to do the cut and paste thing on all three of the blogs I belong to, but I have placed a blog post about it on my main blog, and a news article on Newsvine.com. Please enter my name in the contest, since your “java script” is not acceptable on my sites.

  50. Gail Says:

Milo here; I am keeping an elegant journal on parchment and am using a quill pen and making my own ink from wasp bolls. Does that count?

  51. Gail Says:

Gail here; Milo asked me to pass this on.

  52. Gail Says:

Gail here; MIlo meant to say oak galls. He is stil an ink-making neophyte.

  54. cyndihugs Says:

    @John Powell.
    –Stalkers– :)

  55. YARNLADY Says:

Oh, yeah, and I posted the Fluther Sticker I received on my refrigerator, so that should count for something.

  56. shrubbery Says:

I tried to paste it into my flickr profile but it only came out as a text link…

  57. YARNLADY Says:

I hope the next contest will be geared to everyone, and not just the ones who have a compatable blog site. I posted a fluther blog on three of my websites, even though they wouldn’t take the badge thingy.
