Avatars and fluthers

12:18 pm

First off, the exciting part for most of you: we’re increasing the number of people you can include in your fluther to 500!

The reason for this is we’re moving the place where we store your avatars off of our servers and onto an external service. Moving to S3 will take a load off our servers so things are snappier. Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) is designed for 99.999999999% durability, meaning short of some sort of asteroid that Bruce Willis is unavailable to stop, we won’t lose your avatars. One thing to note is Amazon.com itself uses S3 for it’s business-critical functions so you can bet your avatars will be in good hands.

We thought we’d celebrate by upping the number of people you can include in your fluther.

The video is Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder and CEO, talking about Amazon’s web services (including S3) at Startup School 2008 (I was there!). It’s a pretty fascinating glimpse at how they’ve enabled so many businesses to focus on what’s most important to them.
