Fluther is a free Q&A collective that specializes in getting
fast answers from the right people. Check it out!
We’ve pushed some new tabs (Discussions and Questions) on the main page to beta users, kicking off a period of experimenting with the way that we all can view and filter information on the site.
PM me, Ben, or Tim if you’d like to be included in the beta group.
Special thanks to johnpowell for the kick in the pants.
sure, why not? let’s make it like the 80s on fluther and try some Tab.
If there’s one thing you can count on @jp for, it’s a solid kick in the pants.
I’m diggin’ it.
Way to go boys! 🙂
Yes, please add me to the beta group. The tabs for browsing Discussions v. Questions sound like a great idea!
Send us a PM if you want a beta add.
Also, all of you beta users who have been re-asking me to be beta users — the tabs are on the MAIN PAGE.
I guess I’m not particularly sure what these tabs do…
We can PM on Fluther? I just left you a comment, whether that’s the same thing or not.
fred – a comment is a PM.
ivan – when you ask a question, it asks whether you are asking a question that has a direct answer, or more of a discussion, not necessarily having a definite answer.
as i understand it, those tabs aggregate the Qs into those categories.
i mean, im sure wis.dm is running something far bette…oh. right.
move along.
@epony Mind your manners!
I’ve been looking forward to trying this out for a long time. Yay!
Yay! I am a beta tester! Thanks guys!
(You *knew* I was going to ask didn’t you!)
Fantastic.
Heh. Better than a johnpowell punch in the pants.
I seemed to have had the said tabs, … but they’ve disappeared. Was that supposed to happen??
@noelasun The same thing just happened to me, I thought I was losing my mind, but apparently it’s not just me.
They seem to come and go randomly. I’m trying to find a pattern.
I can reproduce this. If i click on the link at the top of the blog to go back to Fluther the vanish. Refreshing brings them back.
I have seen it in a few other places too.
@ryan Those instructions don’t work for me. I just got the buttons 3 times in a row by viewing my external profile and going back to the homepage (by clicking on the home button), but when I try it now it doesn’t work anymore.
To me, the end user, it seems completely random but does come and go for small periods of time. Then again I might not be even part of the beta group to begin with, but only see it when the template screws up the is_part_of_beta flag check (or whatever you do to separate beta users from regular users). I can access the tab that only shows discussions by manually changing the link to http://www.fluther.com/browse/all/discussions/, which calls back the view directly. Like I said, it’s probably a simple beta flagging error in the template or something.
Ps. Isn’t beta kind of a big word for 2 buttons :p Where are all the bells and whistles!
Quick video..

I like it. I remember something like this was talked about a long time ago, and the majority opinion was against it. I was against it then too. No one wanted to see the community divided.
But, I love this. The default view still shows everything. Questions will get a longer life on the first page of the question tab, which means people will be more likely to get an answer. Which is excellent.
Doesn’t work for me in Chrome or Firefox (not that it should matter). That probably means I’m not in the beta and that I should shut up 🙂
Yeah, they come and go at random…
@robmandu, Or a dick punch.
Ryan…that link was AWESOME. I wish I could GA that comment.
Ahhhh. Thanks ryan. It was a caching issue in a sub-template that I missed. I’ll be fixing that now.
No WONDER I had so many people ask me to be in the beta!
@eponymous
lol @ going way out of your way to be an asshole.
I always go to “Activity for you” first, then “Questions for you” and then “new” followed by “active” with a final look at the full list, so the new tabs don’t make any difference to me, since I answer any and all questions I’m interested in.
@YARNLADY :: I am mostly interested in questions with real answers. This is fantastic for me.
I just wish that I could have http://www.fluther.com/browse/all/questions/ be the default destination when I click on Dr J at the top or the home link at the bottom.
Pretty sure that I can Greasemonkey that once I sober up.
After seeing some of the questions like the “Man trap” I suggest we also need a tab for “just plain (-nonsense-) silly”
@YARNLADY
Why are you suggesting the same thing that killed wis.dm? They should NOT do that.
What JOE said. And this is just about perfect the way it is now.
Damn. Now I need to find something else to complain about.
Shouldn’t that be PM Ben, Tim, or I?
Joe, agreed, I was just being sarcastic. Too many tabs do nothing but cause trouble. I don’t like the “discussion/question” because when I rely on them, and then go through the “new” by date, I see way too many that I missed.
Now can we get a random tab? Mine just generates a random number and unfortunately includes deleted questions.
This is the code I use. I hope that makes your python loving eyes bleed. PHP FTW…!!!
OK.. The code wasn’t posted. That is probably for the best.
No random tab. But you can tell flutherbot random and he’ll give you a random Q that has GQ’s.
Yes, please include me.
